2011-2017

From Idea to Enterprise
Software Company

We started as a team of seven with five customers. Today, the company spans offices around the world and services organizations ranging from Adidas to Electronic Arts to Unilever.

Percolate creates software that streamlines how marketing teams collaborate. I led the design team, encouraging a holistic approach that touched every part of the customer experience and centered our culture on learning.

Beyond Creation Exercises

The work of George Nelson at Herman Miller inspired how we used design thinking to solve problems across our business. From the service we provided customers to the experience we created for employees.

Living With Intention

Elephants is a system for better living. The weekly journaling and quarterly goal-setting changed the way I worked with the design team.

Behind the Scenes of Great Work

The journey people go on to build things they love has always motivated me. DesignTalk was an event series in New York and San Francisco where I invited educators, entrepreneurs and artists to share their stories.

Giving Designers a Voice

Communication skills are important for every role. I enjoyed working with the team to develop their voices and share our learnings with startup and design communities. Here's a selection of our articles and presentations.

2010-2011

Taking Risks and
Learning to Explore

In the spring of 2010, I moved to NYC to experience a new city and to start a new role at The Barbarian Group. Whilst there, I worked on digital projects for clients such as Samsung and CNN.

It wasn’t long before I became drawn to the city’s growing startup community. It struck me as somewhere I could learn more about the role design had in bringing new products into the world.

Working on Side Projects

Bringing people together was the common thread in the side projects I explored. From the Brilliant Design Lecture with the University of Huddersfield to a mobile app that encouraged attendees to share interests at the Feast and SXSW.

2005-2010

The Art of Persuasion

After graduating, I landed a job at Poke to continue my interest in digital design. It’s here where I learned to pitch ideas and speak to the ‘why’ behind our solutions whilst working on websites and campaigns for clients including Channel 4 and Manchester City FC.

Developing a Vision

Paul Arden’s book is a thought-provoking collection of lessons from a career in advertising. Reading it pushed me to think about the type of work I wanted to pursue.

The Devil is in the Details

The world’s best bacon sandwich was near our office. The perfect combination of ingredients and technique was something I learned to apply to projects.

2000-2004

The Hills of Multimedia

My experience at Vega led me to study Multimedia Design at the University of Huddersfield. As part of my studies, I spent a year in Edinburgh working as a Junior Designer at Navyblue. During this time, I came across the trailers Screenbase were making to promote novels. These projects influenced the animations I created to interpret Dan Rhodes’ Anthropology as part of my final year work.

1998-2000

Graphics, Planes and Helicopters

After leaving school, I joined the Vega Group as a Graphics Artist. Here, I cut my teeth on computer-aided design and learned how to use 3D modeling software to illustrate aircraft components for the training experiences we built for the Ministry of Defense.

1980-1998

Below Average Football Skills

I grew up the oldest of four brothers in a village called Wheathampstead in South East England. After realizing that my below average football skills weren't going to get me a place on the Arsenal team, I started applying more attention to art and design.
